Prometheus Ship

My trek into summer movies continued as I meandered down a little road called Prometheus. It was yet another stop that stretched over two hours. I hope those of you following my footsteps like long periods of sitting because this seems to be a growing trend with recent movies. So where do I begin this journey?

The Positives

Prometheus delivered marvelous cinematography: beautiful opening scenes of natural landscapes, gracefully integrated scenes of the ship in flight, and horrifyingly graphic gore scenes that make me hope I never need a cesarean delivery. I loved the footage. The whole film was a treat for the eyes. I found the plot to be well written, with strong characters and a great mystery element. It moved smoothly and kept me engrossed from start to finish.

The Negatives

There weren’t too many negatives. There was the minor turn-off of the overly-creepy “David” character, an annoying movie-cliché scene where something tall is falling and the characters insist on trying to outrun it instead of simply moving to the side (who are you kidding, Hollywood? It doesn’t build suspense it just irritates the audience), and the biggest of all, Charlize Theron more or less played the same frigid ice princess she played as the evil queen in Snow White and the Huntsman. Other than these few pitfalls, I really enjoyed this movie.

It was visually appealing, well written and moved very quickly. Really, you should go watch it…right now!

SPOILER ALERT

You didn’t really think I was going to sign off without talking about that little snippet of information that leaked out, did you? Yes, this movie was meant to be a prequel to the Alien movies. The very last scene shows a giant squidoctopus attacking a humanoid and from that humanoid’s corpse emerges a baby version of the classic Alien monster. It has admittedly been quite sometime since I’ve seen any of the Alien movies but other than this scene, I failed to see any other ties. Had this scene been cut, Prometheus could have been a stand-alone film. Maybe I need to rewatch the others and look for those clues? Pass the popcorn and remote!
