The Dark Knight Rises {Movie Review}

I could say that it was well written and that the characters were strong and consistent. I could say that the special effects were visually stunning and that the plot had me engrossed. It was all of those things. But it was more than that.
The reason I found myself unable to give my typical critique is because it is themed with such a powerful emotion — hope. In a world where people are oppressed and bullied and ruled a handful of heroes offer hope. Sure, you can say that of any super hero, but this was the first movie in a long time that deliberately gave that to its plot. Not one person with power, taking matters into his (or her) own hands, but a hero who gives others the power to see that everyone makes a difference. It’s subtle, but it’s unique. It evoked a very different reaction from what I normally get from a comic-based movie.
My only two demerits for this movie are as follows: Catwoman should have been referred to as “Catwoman” at any point. Because comic-based movies are not just for people that know the comics, it should have been made obvious. The other: I know it’s cliché to have a deep scary voice for the bad guy but in this case it was necessary. It’s hard to take Bane seriously as a bad-ass when he sounds like Sean Connery. Really, all I could think about when he talked was Draco.
This movie is definitely worth seeing. I recommend it for the comic fans and general movie-goer alike.
***SPOILER ALERT***
Consider yourself warned…
This movie is talked about as the “final” installment of the Dark Knight series. The ending leads you to believe that Batman gives his life to save Gotham City but he does not. That last scenes of the movie are a montage of clues for a handful of Bruce Wayne’s closest associates indicating that he is, in fact, alive. Among these associates is a cop named Blake that helped Batman throughout The Dark Knight Rises. In this montage we discover his “given name” is…Robin. So…maybe not so final?

I liked the movie too, but I got to say, I think Sean Connery does have a bad-ass voice. However, it may be worth noting that I’m a James Bond fan…
### Spoiler ###
There is a scene where a horde of Gotham police charge down a street towards the very well armed bad guys into a melee fight. I was a bit confused why Gotham’s finest wouldn’t try something more tactically sound, (and why they weren’t all immediately gunned down) but that’s a minor detail plot-wise.
Awesome movie, thanks for the review.
I know what you mean. Sean Connery is a bad-ass, but in a smooth way. Bane needed a mean voice–something dark and scary. The Sean Connery-type voice was too whimsical for me. As for the cops–it has been my experience that cops in the comic book worlds are a bit inept. If they weren’t they wouldn’t need super heros. They are merely symbols. In this case it was more for show. It was a “We’re all heros” statement meant to be artistic and not so much for functionality. In the real world Bane would not have survived a single night before the Navy Seals got him. Thanks for the comment!
I agree on Bane’s voice, it was not what I would have expected it to be. It needed something to be a bit more believable as a villain. As far as “catwoman”, I am thinking since when she first appeared she was known as “the cat” and in the newspaper that was held up it said “the cat” strikes again, so that is what I think they were trying to accomplish, but saying her secret identity name as well as her real name would have been helpful. Finally, I am all in agreement on a 4th movie, there is no way with that ending that they are not going to make a 4th movie with this series. It will be like what Peter Jackson did. Oh I am never going to make the Hobbit, the LOTR Trilogy is it, no more. Hmmm guess what comes out this year, The Hobbit. Just cause they are saying that it is a trilogy right now doesn’t mean it won’t change in a year.
