Tom Hanks’ Electric City Web Series Wows Audiences
by Jeannie Hart on Thursday, July 19th, 2012
A new interactive web series, Electric City, brings a new dimension to web video. The story revolves around a completely Green Energy based providence and the citizens within its limits. Tom Hanks’ Electric City deals with many common themes such as battles between religion and freedom, corruption, honor, and basic humanistic nature of right and wrong.
Electric City is part spaghetti western and samurai story. What makes this series more interesting, other than the brilliant voice actors and wonderful animation, is an overall website experience. A running character guide to the right of the video shows information on each character as they appear on screen. With the running tab of characters, another widget allows you to keep track—during the video—of each area the story arc takes place.
In a new storytelling twist, the background of the website becomes a part of the storytelling process. Changing with the atmosphere of the short animations it also provides clues to important scenes when episodes are short. On average, the animations run about five minutes and the entire series is only twenty episodes long. In such a short time frame, all the components come together allowing for a new storytelling experience.
If you are looking for something done well and different, Electric City is definitely on that list. Just note, some episodes are not work safe.

Thanks for the great summary review of this new web series. I’ve seen it advertised on the side of my Yahoo page, but wasn’t really interested in it until now.
This looks like a great series. Glad to see that a heavy player in film production is giving serious consideration to web films now. I am curious to see how this will affect the web film industry as a whole.
This sounds interesting…I guess I have something to check out after work
im glad each episode is only about 5 minutes. not sure if my attention span is long enough. Thanks for sharing about this. Have you seen them all? what NSFW items should i be looking for?
Episode 9 has some sex. Besides the random, gratuitous violence (a la Kill Bill style)in some of the flashbacks after episode 10 you’ll have a steady stream of fight scenes that escalate with the story. Let your work ethic be your guide!
Thanks for the review. I look forward to watching the show now with better understanding of how it works.
