Total Recall (2012) - Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel

There isn’t much to say about Total Recall. It’s a rehash of the 1990 sci-fi classic. I can’t say I was disappointed. I guess I would just be more satisfied by a movie with an original plot.

Even though there were subtle differences, the plot was basically the same. Man leads ho-hum life. Man goes to a memory implant facility to have exciting memories of a secret agent’s life implanted. Man has freak-out during procedure. Man finds out he really IS a secret agent. Man spends rest of movie trying to untie multiple double crosses to figure out who’s side he is on while bad guys try to convince him he is dreaming.

Of course, cinematically speaking, this version of Total Recall was a little better — twenty-two years of technological advances in special effects will do that. While Arnold’s acting was absolutely terrible in the original, Colin Farrell did really well…except that his character was a bit of pansy. I won’t hold it against him though. Arnold has some pretty big tough-guy shoes to fill. I did, however, prefer Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel in the roles of Lori and Melina respectively. Mostly I’m just tickled that they kept the three-boobied prostitute

I cannot, in good conscience, give this movie a very high rating simply because it IS a remake. I know this is common practice in the movie world but it seems TOO common in the last few years. Maybe I’m still just bent over that travesty they called Clash of the Titans.

In summary: the movie was watchable. Total Recall is good entertainment for the new generation and a fun callback for the not-so-new generation.
